Community outreach comprises a large of my future teacher’s curriculum and authentic teaching experience. Every class I teach from the Early Childhood-6th grade future teachers through the middle and high school future teachers attend three Family Science Learning Events each semester, writing reflections and evaluations of these experiences. These events are held in ethnically and socio-economically diverse communities in South Texas, providing the student teachers as well as the teachers, administrators and families from these districts authentic science demonstrations and short investigations. All stakeholders benefit from these experiences as perceptions change regarding who can do science (everyone!) and perceptions related to cultures that are different from our own. A large part of my research data comes from these events and the participants as we have impacted thousands of students, families and administrators through these community outreach efforts, illustrated in the chart below.
